It's-no-good...

Bonjour, and that's about the extent of our french even after living here in France for four months! Like every good conversation, I thought we could start with a wee discussion on the weather. Spring is definitely here it's 15 degree days and the snow is melting fast. It certainly seems that climate change is happening and really messing with the seasons. As a whole the snow conditions here in Les Gets have been anything but good with at least a day of rain a week on average, limited sun and the odd snow flake but we can't live our lives complaining so we will move on!

We have had some beaut days and some great powder turns and our skiing and boarding has improved. A real highlight was the Porte de Soleil loop we did on a stunning day off. We were in line for first lifts under a bluebird sky as we set off for Switzerland. The loop consists of 6 other resorts and a total distance of nearly 100km so is a big day out! It was great to pass through some other quaint mountain towns and we got to experience a wide range of lifts from the large cable cars to ancient NZ style chair lifts and even a T-bar for good measure. Luckily there was time for a cheese fondant and glass of wine at lunch before the journey continued. Sleep came easily that night.

Sleep always seems to come pretty easily here as it’s a fairly full on lifestyle. We have become accustomed to having lots of little kids running around making a huge mess with notable weeks having 5 kids under 3 years old and another week having 7 kids under 6 years old. We have also had a couple of large parties of 20 adults as well as some Dutch guests, famous people and the odd miserable person who is difficult and just wants to make everyone unhappy. It has also been interesting seeing the different parenting styles (or lack of) and certainly worrying seeing how addicted kids (some as young as 2) are to iPads and technology.
It hasn't all been guests and kids though, we have become great friends with some of the other chalet hosts and shared many a red wine and plenty of cheese them. We are looking forward to spending some time with Sam and Emer (fellow hosts) in Majorca in October and then road tripping through the Scottish Highlands, Ireland and the lakes district afterwards. It is always good to talk about life's issues with fellow kiwis and was great to have Mikey another Nelson and Scarfie lad and his girlfriend to share a pint with.

As the days get longer and the temperature increases it is time to start thinking about our next adventure. In a months time we are flying out to Croatia where we will have just over 3 weeks to make our way south through Albania and across to Corfu to spend a weeks sailing, suntanning and celebrating a big birthday. Unfortunately to sustain our nomadic lifestyle we need to earn a few $$$ so we have drawn the short straw and are heading to Tromso in Norway after our month off.

Tromso is one of the most northern cities in the world and will have 24 hours of sun for over 6 weeks while we are there. Our job consists of guiding kayak and hiking trips as well as looking after some of the 300 huskies and puppies the company has and the odd bit of cooking for conferences. We are both very excited about this opportunity and are looking forward to getting on the road again so get in touch if you have similar travel plans or need an excuse to escape the rat race we would love to see ya!
